To reach the
Recreational Trail, turn right on the first dirt road after the Entrance
Gate and drive approximately 1/3 mile to the trail head and parking
area.
About the Trail
The Samuel W. Wahl
Recreational Area is a 580-acre tract owned by the City of Lubbock on
the north side of Lake Alan Henry. The Recreational Trail is Phase I of
a multi-phased Trails Master Plan for the lake. The trail is six-feet
wide and is 2.5 miles in length. The trail consists of a fully
accessible loop of approximately ¾-mile with a crushed granite base and
an approximate 1 ¾ mile moderate natural surface trail. The trailhead
and pavilion with interpretive nature signs are located near the parking
lot, and there are three benches located along the accessible trail.
The connecting loops allow able hikers to vary their routes, and they
connect three scenic overlooks. The overlook closest to the main park
road is the highest point in the park and affords outstanding views of
the lake and surrounding land. The other two overlooks are located on
bluffs above the lake.
Trail construction
was sponsored by the City of Lubbock and the Texas Parks and Wildlife
Department through National Recreational Trails Funds administered by
the U.S. Department of Transportation. Assisting in the installation of
trail signs was Heath Spear and members of local Boy Scout Troop 544.
Spear planned the project, and built and installed the trail signs as
part of his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project. The trail opened on
November 29, 2005.
